Declaration of the First Republic of Armenia (May 30, 1918)

May 28, 1918 is a turning point in the modern history of the Armenian nation. On that day, the Armenian statehood was established, which has ceased to exist since 1045, with the fall of the Bagradite Dynasty.

In the ARF Archives there are numerous materials regarding the First Republic of Armenia, including the Declaration of Independence. This declaration, with the call number 1-1-1 in our archives, reads as follows.-

DECLARATION

In view of the complete political collapse of the Trans-Caucasus and the new situation created by the proclamation of the independence of Georgia and Azerbaijan, the Armenian National Council declares itself the supreme and sole administration of the Armenian provinces. Due to certain grave circumstances that prevent us from forming an Armenian National Government, the Armenian National Council temporarily assumes all governmental functions in order to pilot the political and administrative leadership of the Armenian provinces.

The second item in our May Newsletter is a receipt of a fundraising, for the army of newly independent Armenia, organized in the USA in 1920. The ARF Central Committee of America was the moving force and organizer of the fundraiser. The receipt that is seen here, belongs to an American Armenian named Hovannes Martirossian. He had donated $100, a considerable amount in those days. The date is April 25, 1920.

The third item is a post-card photograph of the Armenian Embassy in Washington DC, in 1918. The ambassador was Armen Karo (Garegin Pastrmajian).
